- In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), teachers are compelled to exercise good-faith efforts to remain informed regarding the educational accommodations and special needs of students assigned to their courses.
Am I required to acknowledge my students’ special services or accommodations?
- Yes. Teachers are required to review and formally acknowledge any special services or accommodation plans applicable to students assigned to their courses.
- Such accommodations are legally mandated supports designed to ensure equitable access to instruction and educational opportunity. By acknowledging these plans, the teacher affirms receipt, awareness, and responsibility for implementing the specified accommodations with fidelity and in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, including, where applicable, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Failure to timely acknowledge and appropriately implement required accommodations may constitute noncompliance with applicable legal obligations and may expose the educator and/or institution to potential legal liability. Teachers are therefore expected to review and acknowledge such plans promptly upon notification and/or availability.
There are multiple teachers in a course. Who is responsible for acknowledging Student Services & Accommodations?
In courses with multiple teachers, the primary enrolled teacher is solely responsible for reviewing and formally acknowledging a student’s special services and accommodations.
Co-teachers, additional teachers of record, and support staff are not required to acknowledge these services. Only the primary teacher has full access to view and acknowledge accommodation details; other teachers can see only an indicator that accommodations exist and the acknowledgment status.
I took over for another teacher. Do I still have to acknowledge Student Services & Accommodations?
- Yes, if you take over for another teacher, all previously acknowledged special services and accommodations will be reset.
- As the new teacher, you will be required to review and acknowledge all existing and any new special services and accommodations to ensure compliance and proper support for the student.
- If your acknowledgements have not been reset, please submit a Support ticket.
