How to Use Canvas Calendar

If used correctly, the Calendar tab in Canvas can be a useful tool for your classroom. Canvas already has great in-depth resources on how to use the calendar as a teacher and how to use it as a student. But below, you can find a quick overview of the basics.

Getting to the Calendar

You can get to the calendar anytime by clicking its icon in the left-hand menu.

Viewing the Calendar

The calendar will display the Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes, Events, and non-graded items that have due dates. Each type has their own little icon; See a key below.

Discussion:

Assignment:

Quiz:

Event:

Non-graded item:

Each item will be color-coded to your courses in the right-hand bar. As time goes by, the events will be crossed off the calendar.

Note: Everything above, except events, will appear in the calendar automatically for both you and your students. However, as a virtual teacher, you may need to bear an extra piece of information in mind if you and your students are in different time zones: It may change where the item appears in the calendar. Unless you specify it, due dates will be set for 11:59pm in your time. But if you're in, say, CST, and your students are in EST, that will cause their calendar to be off by a day. You can fix this by shifting the due dates for assignments up by an hour or two; Making them due at 10:59pm CST will cause them to stay on the same day for your students in this example. There's a way to do this automatically; Submit a Support ticket, and we can set that up for you.

You can also change your view in the top right. This works in much the same way as any other virtual calendar. You can view it by MonthWeek, or select Agenda to see the current day in more detail.

Adding to the Calendar

Whenever you set an item with a due date in your course, it will automatically appear in the calendar for anyone enrolled in your courses.

If you want to add a new event to the calendar, click the Create new event icon mceclip3.png on the top right side. That's a great option to alert students to extra information, like days they have off from school.

Using the Calendar

Both teachers and students can click individual events to see their details or go to the assignment by clicking the title. Teachers can also edit or delete items here.
