Grading Policy in Canvas

Overview of Expectations

It is imperative for teachers to adhere to their district's grading policies. These guidelines serve as a standardized framework that ensures consistency and fairness in assessing student performance. Additionally, adhering to the designated grading periods and finalizing grades before they're due allows for timely feedback and progress reporting, facilitating effective communication between teachers, students, and parents. Ultimately, aligning with the district's grading policies and grading periods promotes a cohesive educational experience and supports a comprehensive understanding of each student's academic development.

Where to Find Your School's Grading Policies

When you accept a course, you should be given access to the school's or district's Teacher Reference sheet. Below is an example of one. It will include a lot of important information, including:

a) The Campus/District policies on missing and late work

b) How they want assignment categories to be set up in Canvas

c) The number of assignments in each category, minimum grade requirements (if any)

d) How frequently grades need to be updated.

Where to Find Your Course's Grading Periods

Your school's academic calendar may be linked in the Teacher Reference sheet, as it is in the above example. In order to get that information into your Canvas grade book, the Solutions and Data teams work together. Given the number of districts we service, it may take some time for it to be set up in your course so please give it time. That being said, if you're coming up on the end of the first grading period and you still don't have them in your Canvas course, please reach out to Solutions.

You can see whether or not you have grading periods by looking for the Grading Periods filter in your Gradebook. If this option doesn't exist, then your course doesn't have periods attached to it.
