FortiClient VPN Connection Troubleshooting Guide (Teacher Facing)

🔧 FortiClient VPN Connection Troubleshooting Guide (Teacher Facing)

This guide is intended to help you resolve common connection issues when using the FortiClient VPN. Please follow the steps in order, as each builds upon the previous and could resolve the issue without needing further action.

 Step 1:  Verify Your Credentials

Why: Incorrect usernames or passwords are the most common cause of login failure.

What to Do:

  • If you’re copying and pasting, ensure:

    • No extra spaces are accidentally included at the beginning or end.

    • The entire string was copied correctly.

  • Try typing your credentials manually as an extra safeguard.

🌐Step 2:  Check Network Connectivity

Why: A stable internet connection is required for VPN access.

What to Do:

  1. Make sure your internet is working:

    • Check your connectivity icon in the bottom right of your screen
    • Verify your modem/router is running
    • Try visiting a few websites to confirm.

  2. Restart your modem/router:

    • Unplug the power, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in (the wait time drains residual electricity allowing a clean restart).

    • Wait for it to fully restart (usually 1–2 minutes).

  3. Try connecting to the VPN again.

⚙️Step 3:  Confirm FortiClient VPN Settings

Why: Incorrect configuration settings prevent successful VPN connection.

What to Do:

  • Open FortiClient VPN.

  • Verify the following:

    • VPN IP server address (69.89.97.164) matches your network configuration (refer to step 9 from Main Installation Doc).

    • VPN: Select "SSLN-VPN"

    • Connection Name: Enter "Proxlearn VCP"

    • Description: Enter "Proxlearn VCP"

    • Remote Gateway: Enter "vpn.proxlearn.com"

    • Custom Port: Default to "443"

    • Authentication: Select "Save Login"

    • Username: Enter your Proxlearn email (ex. sjohnson@proxlearn.com)

    • Client Certification: Default to "None"

🧹Step 4:  Remove Other VPNs

Why: Previous VPN software can conflict with FortiClient and block proper connection.

What to Do:

  • Go to your system's app manager.
  • Close and Uninstall any old VPN apps.
  • Restart your computer.

🔥Step 5: Adjust Firewall Settings

Why: Firewalls can block VPN traffic unless configured to allow it.

What to Do:

  1. Temporarily disable your firewall (Windows Defender or third-party security software).

  2. Try connecting to FortiClient VPN.

    • If it works, your firewall is likely blocking the connection.

  3. Re-enable your firewall, go to your firewall settings, and add an exception or allow rule for FortiClient.

Important: Never leave your firewall permanently disabled.

🔄Step 6: Check for Updates

Why: FortiClient may not work properly if it’s outdated or corrupted.

What to Do:

  • Open FortiClient.

  • Look for any prompts to update the application.

  • If none appear:

    1. Visit the official FortiClient download site

    2. Download the latest version.

    3. If problems persist, uninstall and reinstall FortiClient completely.

Step 7: Clear Cache

Why: Cached data can cause connection or login problems.

What to Do:

  • Clear FortiClient cache (if supported in your version):

    • Look in the FortiClient settings for “Clear Cache” or “Reset VPN.”

  • Clear your browser cache and cookies:

    • Open your browser settings.

    • Navigate to “Privacy and Security.”

    • Clear browsing data (cache + cookies).

🔁Step 8: Restart FortiClient

Why: Programs can occasionally hang or freeze mid-process.

What to Do:

  • Fully close FortiClient.

    • Right-click in the system tray to ensure it’s not running in the background.

  • Reopen the FortiClient application.

  • Try connecting again.

  • Clear Cache if no connection is made
  • Try connecting again.

💻Step 9: Restart Your Device

Why: A system restart can finalize recent software installations or updates.

What to Do:

Option A: Standard Restart

  1. Use your system’s shutdown process.

  2. Power off completely.

  3. Wait 30 seconds.

  4. Restart and try FortiClient again.

Option B: Hard Reset

  • For Windows:

    • Hold the Shift key while clicking “Shut Down.”

    • This forces a complete power cycle.

    • Wait 30 seconds before powering on again.

  • Click for additional options for Hard Reset

This is helpful after major software installs or updates (like a new VPN version or settings change).

✅ Final Tip

If none of the above steps work, submit a PLI Support Ticket. Be prepared to share:

  • The exact error message you see.

  • A screenshot of your FortiClient settings.

  • What steps you’ve already attempted.
